Iran sentenced Nobel-winning human rights activist Nargis to another 15 months in prison

In a twist of events, an Iranian court sentenced Nobel laureate and human rights activist Nasreen Sotodeh to an additional 15 months in prison, extending her already 12-year sentence. Nasreen was found guilty of various charges of spreading propaganda against the state, leading to this new prison term.

The indictment suggests that Nasreen Sotoudeh engaged in activities considered propaganda against the country while in prison, according to the government. Her family members have criticized the new sentence, arguing that Nasreen has faced legal repercussions five times since March 2021.

Nasreen Satodeh was not present in the court when the recent verdict was announced. Despite his decades-long commitment to human rights, Nasreen has faced repeated imprisonment over the past two decades, with a total of 13 arrests. His family has expressed displeasure at the recent verdict.

Currently, Nasreen Sotodeh is being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison. However, according to the new sentence, he will have to spend an additional two years outside Tehran. This means, Nasreen will be barred from leaving the capital for a certain period of time.

The court also said that after serving her sentence, Nasreen Sotoudeh will be restricted from engaging in any political or social group. In addition, he must refrain from using mobile phones while outside Tehran.

Nasreen Satodeh, 51, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for her tireless efforts to combat violence against women in Iran. Unfortunately, his current incarceration prevents him from accepting the prestigious award in person. In her absence, her teenage daughter accepted the honor on her behalf, who noted that she had not seen her imprisoned mother in years.
