Israeli Airstrike Claims Lives of 10 Iranian Intelligence Officials in Iran
In a targeted airstrike, attributed to Israel, on a residential building in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Saturday (January 20), ten individuals, including the chief of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence and his deputies, have been reported dead. The national news agency of Syria confirmed the attack, and the news was relayed by the French news agency AFP.
The Syrian Arab News Agency, mentioning the location of the bombing, reported that the strike occurred near the Mazeh district in the capital city of Damascus. Israel has been identified as the perpetrator of this airstrike.
Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, informed AFP that the death toll has risen from six to over ten after recovering bodies trapped beneath the debris.
An informed source, communicating to Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity, revealed that the intelligence unit of the IRGC was the intended target of the airstrike. Both intelligence operatives and their assistants were present at the site during the attack.
As of now, Israel has not provided any official comments on the missile strike on Iranian intelligence assets in Syria. The incident has raised tensions in the region, prompting concerns about potential repercussions and further escalation in the ongoing conflicts.
